Announcement! Pub Talk has already matured from a mere discussion to a group - CLICK HERE!

Now we have the option of having different discussions within the group - Check it out!

Pub Talk for 20-30 somethings with Rob Kugler, Professor of Christian Studies at Lewis and Clark, 7:30pm Thursday, January 12th, 2012, at the Lucky Labrador, 915 SE Hawthorne

What good is the Bible, anymore? Christians, let alone non-believers, read it less and less, increasingly they find it irrelevant to their lives today. Indeed, for all of the talk in public about the Bible, surveys show that there is far less reading of it in private.

In this conversation we'll engage the question posed above. We'll hear from some believers who still find the Bible worth the read, from a scholar who thinks it is an overlooked classic, and from those who think it pointless. The conversation will be about hearing views, sharing perspectives, an occasion for everyone to learn from one another.

Is age a criteria for attendance?

I want to confirm here or not what I was told by several people.  People older than the target audience are welcome to attend.  Is that true?

About Holy Books

Does a book that contains holiness become any less holy because it is not read by a current culture?

Does its holiness become any less holy because its stewards have been unfaithful?

What makes something timeless, pure?  Its popularity?  Culture?  Or its pure essence that transcends time and place?

I suppose it raises Pontius Pilate's question, "What is truth?"

pub talk demographics

I'm actually discouraging my baby-boomer friends from showing up, because I believe this group needs to have some time with peers closer to their age. Let's figure out "pub talk two" for boomers!

Lutheran boomers

In the aging, declining Lutheran denominations, baby boomers are the new youth.

pub talk this week!

Just a reminder about the pub talk this Thursday. Rob Kugler (professor at Lewis and Clark) and I will be at the Lucky Lab on Hawthorne at 7:30pm, with some tables together and a little sign. Great discussion on the authority and "usefulness" of the Bible. Tell your 20-30 something friends! -John R-H

great start!

Just met last night at the Lucky Lab on Hawthorne for our first 20-30s pub talk. A dozen of us gathered around Rob Kugler, discussing great questions about the Bible. Solid start, but we're looking for a quieter pub. People seemed open to meeting monthly. Other suggestions were My Father's Place, Eddie's Pizza, Thai Food Cafe, GreenDragon, Lucky Lab in NW, Howell's in Oregon City, La Carretta on Mcloughlin.

And Rob is open to coming back for round two. There was also a suggestion we invite somebody to help us discuss truth in other religions.

If pub talk met second Thursday of the month, dates would be Feb. 8, March 8, April 12, May 10, June 14 (someplace with a patio!)

What are your thoughts?

Muslim Input

You might talk with Jeff Kallevig at Christ the King Tigard. I know there has been a Muslim family or community that has used their facility from time to time. Might be a good source for a conversation partner. Give EMO a call, too. Lots of resources/connections there!
